Scholastic Overview
The Tractor Trailer Training / CDL Program is a 14 quarter-credit-hour program designed to prepare you to pass the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exam
in Connecticut. The program consists of 80 hours of classroom training and 120 hours of hands-on training. You will receive classroom training to help you pass the written portion of the CDL exam; this consists of a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of Tractor Trailer Driving plus a thorough awareness of all vehicle systems. You will receive hands-on training to prepare you to pass the skills portion of the CDL exam; this is comprised of pre-trip inspection, coupling and uncoupling, and field and road maneuvers.
All students are prepared to take the following endorsement exams in addition to their license:
- Air Brakes
- Doubles / Triples
- Tankers
- Hazardous Materials
The CDL Tractor Trailer Training Program graduates are qualified as entry-level professional drivers who can operate straight trucks in excess of 26,000 pounds and tractor-trailer combination vehicles up to 80,000 pounds. Operating these vehicles is a great responsibility, and the Federal government has set high national standards for the licensing of drivers.
Maximum classroom and field size: 40 students
Field training student/instructor ratio: 8:1
Road training student/instructor ratio: 4:1
Program length: 6 weeks days/16 weeks evenings

Field and Road Training
The field and road training is designed to ensure that students are safe drivers and are prepared to pass the State of Connecticut skills test. Skills developed and practiced in the field and on the road include:
- Pre-trip inspection
- Coupling and uncoupling
- Backing maneuvers including straight back, alley dock, and blindside parallel parking
- Hazard awareness
- Emergency maneuvers and skid control
- Recognizing and reporting malfunctions
- Log book maintenance
- Accident procedures
- Trip planning
